I know I've been bad about updating the blog with our life happenings, but the past two months have been absolutely crazy for us. We are just now getting back into the pace of life and catching our breaths.
Here are some of the major happenings:
Digilent to National Instruments
I don't know if I've even mentioned it on the blog, but long story short, the company I work for, Digilent, was recently bought by National Instruments. The deal closed at the end of last year, but changes didn't start happening until April. Despite all the prep work we supplied NI (mountains of paperwork: benefits, employee stock plan, life insurance, 401(k), etc), they still haven't gotten everything completely figured out and squared away. It has been very frustrating. We are supposed to be getting access to their intranet this month, but that's debatable. I still love my job, though, and am finally feeling confident in my position and have undertaken more responsibilities that will hope my advancement in the company. Also, I'm getting a new chair soon, so that's great.
Zak's new job
Zak recently started a new job as a laborer for the WSU grounds crew. He is already enjoying it; he gets to ride on the 4-wheeler, spend time outside, do physical work, and get paid decent money for it. I am also thrilled because we get to carpool to and from work together! This job will last until mid-August, and then he will return to his school-year job at UI.
Rachel the semi-runner
I decided to give the Couch to 5k program another shot, once the ice had gone away. For the first few weeks, Zak and Penny came along with me, but eventually I went at it on my own. Not that I didn't want their company, but Zak had several other obligations and priorities, and running by myself with Penny still isn't something I like to do (she's so strong! and there was too much for me to focus on), so I went rogue. Last week I finished the program! Today was my first 'free run', and it was my best time yet. I can now run 2.65 miles in 30 minutes and to me, that is HUGE! I am going to work on improving my time, and I would love to do a local 5k run by the end of the year. I have been surprised with how much I've enjoyed getting up early and running through our neighborhood.
First emergency
First off, everything is fine and we are all ok. On the second day of Zak's 2-week camping trip for school, I got a call from him from the hospital in McCall, ID. I quickly left work (everyone was so kind and supportive throughout all of this) and Jenna and I drove to pick Zak up. It was an 8-hour round-trip and I would not have been able to survive that day if my sister wasn't with me. Zak had an urethral stricture and was prescribed 2 types of antibiotics, Vicodin, and had a catheter in for the next week until his surgery day. For a week he basically laid or sat on the couch, depending on what was comfortable, and took his pills and tried not to complain too much. The day Jenna flew back to CA was the same day as Zak's surgery at 6am. Jenna's flight was at 6:40, so after our farewell, I rushed back to Moscow to wait until the surgery was over. It was successful and Zak woke up in the recovery room talking about how his head felt like macaroni & cheese. We actually had a very pleasant experience with everyone at the hospital. The nurses laughed at Zak's jokes, were funny and personable. After an hour or two after the surgery, I took him home and took care of him. He had to have a catheter in until Friday, and once he took that out, everything has been great. He has a follow-up appointment on Wednesday, but he feels great, so we should be good to go.
My sincere thanks for our family and friends for all their help and support with this. Special shout-outs to:
-Reilly parents, who took care of getting the truck fixed (it stopped working 2 days before Zak left), it helped so much to know that was taken care of
-Gabe, for lending us the Jeep for a week
-Jenna, for being incredibly helpful, sweet and supportive. She is truly the best sister anyone could ask for, and I'm so so glad she's mine :)
Jenna's visit
Jenna spent 2 weeks with us! It was a great trip, with lots of fun adventures and food. I was lucky to get several days off, or work 1/2 days when she was here. I especially loved having our friends meet Jenna, who have heard about her for 2 years but have not met her. Likewise, she was excited to meet our friends (& their pets); all the times spent together with friends were fun and I'm so happy everyone loved her/she loved them! She was thrilled to meet Hampton the pig, who is now a PIG (he's so big!) as well. We played games, had a marathon of Daniel Craig as James Bond, went camping, made food, and rode roller coasters at Silverwood. It was really fun for me to have her around, because she is such a delight and always willing to help. After driving almost 9 hours in Gabe's Jeep to get Zak, I collapsed once we got home. She made us dinner and it was amazing. Penny loved her, and loved snuggling with her on the couch. We all loved having her here and can't wait for her next visit!
Wedding season
There are 3 big weddings this summer! Zak's sister Delaney is getting married in Boston in August and a few days later, my brother Kenny is getting married in California. We are still trying to finalize flights and trip details, but it's an exciting time! Our great friends Chad & Bryan will be getting married here at the end of July, and we are both in the wedding party. I will also be helping Chad's best friend Emily with her wedding at the beginning on September--I am going to be in charge of the food, etc. We are so excited to be a part of these weddings, as we love all the people involved!
General/Penny
Penny is about a year old! We still love the crap out of her and she still loves us! With all the chaos in our lives lately, she probably has been acting out a little. We have come home more than once to find a hole (or two) she's dug while waiting for us to return. We've been told it's probably separation anxiety, so we are taking actions to fix that. Now that the weather is nice, we leave her out in the yard on a tether. The cord is long enough that she can rest in the shade by the bushes or the shed and get to her toys, etc. So far it's been a bit of trial and error; we came home one day to her waiting for us at the gate...which is NOT accessible if she's on the tether. She had dug it up. Of course. We've also come home to her wrapped around the bushes or poles by the patio. It's funny because she's a very smart dog, but she can't figure out how to unwrap herself? We have also been working on some new tricks, like balancing a treat on her nose. She has not gained the composure yet to accomplish that, but she is getting good at waiting until we say a command.
Most nights she sleeps with us, sometimes she leaves in the middle of the night to go to her bed. I usually go to bed earlier and will read until I get tired. It's very cute because she will watch me pull and rearranged the blankets and wait until I get into bed and then she hops up on and cuddles with me. She loves to sit/lay next to me, but it's better if she can have most of her butt on me in someway. It's really silly, but sweet. She is getting really good at jumping to catch the Frisbee, it's so fun to watch her! It doesn't seem like her leg is bugging her at all. She runs, jumps, plays just fine. She's a very happy, loving dog.
Other general updates...we are currently working on some ideas for the yard. A few weeks ago I acquired some heirloom tomato seedlings. I was on a run and there was a sign saying they were free, so I ran home with two of them...and then drove back to get a few more. They are in a big pot inside, but we are about to transplant them to the window box by our bedroom. I have seeds for squash, cucumber and lettuce, and while I have hopes for all of them to do well, I'm most concerned about the tomatoes. I have some flower seeds that I'd like to plant in a different section of that yard. Zak wants to build a little stone patio, we have started to look around to get ideas on what will work the best.
I apologize for the lack of pictures. I have a bunch from Jenna's visit, but they are also on Facebook, so you can view them there. I think that's everything for now!

Our California Christmas (part 1)
Let me start off by saying that we had a fantastic trip to California. The weather was beautiful, warm and we enjoyed all the food and company immensely!
Our first full day in CA was Friday. It was nice to have a day that was somewhat of a relaxing one before the holiday rush. We met up with my best friend Amy at the newly installed Five Guys & Burgers place a few blocks from home. We sat outside, goofed off with the fancy new soda machine, and just enjoyed the delicious food. We spent the rest of the day playing old school Mario on the Wii and laughing at the old mix CDs I made in high school. Zak teased me for all of the terrible bands I used to listen to, but I found a few gems here and there! Kenny and Jenna had some evening activities to attend to, but we had a quick family meal of salmon, yum! While they were out, my parents and Zak & I helped put up ornaments on the tree and watched the movie Elf.
Christmas Eve with my family consists of a big family dinner, a little program put on by the cousins, and cousin gift exchange. The dinner is more or less Thanksgiving dinner, with a few holiday bonuses. Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, creamed spinach, creamed onion, yam & apples, rolls, raspberry fruit jello, oh everything is so wonderful. And you always think if you get small enough portions of everything, you can go back and have a little bit more. Nope. I was stuffed and sad, because it's been awhile since I had my aunt Karri's famous rolls, or the gravy my grandma makes. But we had enough for leftovers the next day!
When the cousins were little, one of the oldest ones, Sasha, would help put together a little Christmas program for everyone. It usually involved playing instruments, singing, reading Christmas books or poems, etc. This year we had a nice program. My grandma usually puts on the Christmas program in the Cambodian branch in Oakland for church, and we did a simplified version of that. I played the keyboard and sang with Jenna, my cousins Allie and Sasha and/or with Kenny. The boy cousins read verses from the scripture, my aunt read a family favorite, The Journey of the Magi, a poem by T.S. Eliot. It was a nice time. We did the cousin gift exchange (Zak got a $25 Amazon gift card to do what he pleases with, I had to wait until Wednesday because Grant, Ali & Annalise were in Utah with Ali's family, but that was fine with me) and eventually went home and to bed.
On Christmas, my siblings and I always got up unnaturally early to go through our stockings and open our gifts from Santa. Kenny was bummed that initially Jenna and I weren't having that, since we now want to sleep in. But we agreed to a little pact to get up around 7. It was hard to say no to Kenny, who has spent the last 2 Christmases in Sweden. So we all got up early and looked through our stockings. Santa brought us the game Taboo, as well as some nice soaps for Zak, a set of silicone whisks, new spatula set and measuring spoon set for me, and some Thai curry cashews for Zak as well. Zak's co-worker's roommate is the manager at our Bath & Body Works, so he scored 3 big bottles of different body sprays, and a body cream for me, I was impressed with the good choices he made. Jenna wanted to play the new Lego Harry Potter (years 5-7) on the Wii, so we did that until our parents got up. We heated up the tea ring (similar to cinnamon rolls, but better) Grandma made for us, got dressed and went to church for an hour. I think it was the first time at church with my family that I haven't gone up to play the piano or sing, it was so nice to sit with Zak the entire meeting! It was nice to see old church members and friends. My best friend very talented family sang/played instruments, which was beautiful.
After church, we changed back into our new pjs ('jim-jams', as Jenna calls them), and opened our gifts. Zak got me some beautiful pearl cluster drop earrings that I've been in love with since they got them in the store. He also got me the Sims 3 game for the PS3. Neither one of us have played anything related to the Sims before, so we were excited to try it. I got him a nice leather belt he specifically told me about, two visual companion guides to a show we love dearly, Firefly, and, unfortunately, the wrong cologne. I felt really bad, but explained that there were four similarly named ones, but I was smart to keep the receipt and we exchanged it for the correct one back home.
I was excited to give out the presents we got for my family: Dad got all of the Oakland A's World Series games on DVD, as well as a cool puzzle with all of the vintage pennants from the MLB. I made Mom a series of magnets from places and of people she loves: a scene of fall back east (she grew up in PA), Hawaii (born there), the Oakland Temple, Yosemite national park, a picture of all 6 of us from this summer at the California Academy of Sciences in S.F., and a collage of some pictures of all of us: a wedding picture of me & Zak, Kenny & Jenna at Disneyland, all 3 of us siblings at the airport when Kenny got home from Sweden, and a goofy one of us 3 trying to do one of the jumping pictures in S.F. right before Kenny left. I was really pleased with them. I made Jenna this cute calendar journal thing I saw on-line: I took a bunch of index cards, cut them in half, then stamped the date on them. And then found 12 vintage postcards to use as month dividers. So every day she can write on a card about something fun or significant that happened that day on that year. And then the next year, do the same. I made my mom one for her birthday and she loved it; I also made one for myself and it's a cute idea. We got Kenny the show I mentioned previously, Firefly. We made him watch it while he was here and he got just as addicted as we did! He was thrilled. They all were.
We opened some nice and fun gifts, including: the book Earth, by Jon Stewart (been dying for this book!), some brown 501s for Zak, a coat for me, a nice big saucepan, a California calendar, some weird art things my siblings found at a thrift store, and the movies Serenity & Raiders of the Lost Ark. Jenna was pumped about her boys shark slippers from Old Navy (she's been super into sharks and marine biology, she's planning on majoring in it), Kenny was happy to receive a George Foreman grill (our cousins also got similar grills, oh the joys!). My mom got these beautiful plates from Williams & Sonoma, it was so cute to see how excited she was. After all the wrapping paper was thrown away, we lazed about for a bit. Mom wanted to make her famous thick, soft Christmas cookies with eggnog for later, so I helped her frost and decorate them. It was fun to help her with them; I had tried make them previously for our friends' party and while they were a success, nothing beats my mom's, who has made these for years.
We headed over to the grandparents' mid-afternoon. We had waffles, sausage and quiche for brunch on Christmas day. My mom recently got a fancy waffle maker, so she brought that and made delicious Belgian waffles. The rest of the day was low-key. We opened presents from my grandparents. Well, actually, my grandparents sent us some money before we left, so we just enjoyed watching other people open stuff. Although I was jealous of Kenny getting the complete Star Wars collection on Blu-Ray, sweet deal. Then we played Taboo for awhile, which is always fun. We eventually had the cookies and eggnog, leftovers from the previous night and stuffed ourselves, again. And just sat around and talked. It was a nice day.
Since that turned out to be a huge post, I will write about the rest of our trip later!
*if I can get my act together to get some pictures of our gifts, I'll post them, but you'll have to do with this for now :)*

Our Trip to CA: Thursday: Jenna's 17th Birthday, Airsoft Battle, Our Departure
We woke up early and packed quickly. We also made half of the birthday sign for Jenna's birthday. Once everything was ready and gathered, we said thank you and good-bye to my grandparents' and headed on over to my parents' place.
a pretty good sign, if I do say so myself!
We had delicious Belgian waffles with strawberries, whipped cream and bacon for breakfast, yum! And then Jenna opened her presents. My parents got her these silly sunglasses that are a replica of the ones my grandpa had and let her wear, and then she broke them. She was pretty pumped. We got her a pretty ruby sterling silver ring from the Sundance catalog. Ruby is her birthstone and we figured it would be a good ring for her. A few months ago, once we had decided on it, I had sent her some pictures of rings I liked, and said Zak was thinking about getting me one of them, and sent her a picture of the ruby one, and she said she loved it, so I knew we were golden from then on. She was a happy girl and enjoyed everything.
Oh, and I got rid of a bunch of stuff at my parents' house, and saved some treasures. The weirdest part was quickly going through my journals from high school (while trying not to vomit) and pulling out the memorable notes and pictures, while throwing away the majority of them. Zak wanted to read them, and I did not allow that under any circumstance, but did ok the material I saved for him.
Somehow, the airsoft battle idea just came out of nowhere. We got my dad a semi-automatic one for his birthday, Jenna got one on her last visit here, and Kenny and Zak & I had them from Rexburg, so we decided awhile ago that we would have this epic battle. But it never happened, and then all of a sudden on Thursday, we just decided to go for it. Mom took some pictures and told us some rules and we five headed off to the park nearby for the battle.
It was actually pretty fun, and Dad's gun was fear-inducing. It didn't hurt as much as our pistols, but the sound of it struck terror into our hearts. About half way through, the boys were resting and one of them got shot by a bullet, but it wasn't from us. They looked at some bullets on the ground, and none of us had that color bullet. Then they saw the interloper, who was shooting from behind the fence. They came over and told us and I shouted, "SHOW YOUR FACE! FIGHT US LIKE A MAN!" all goofy, and then the battle resumed. I remember screaming and running away from the boys, down towards the fence and then I looked up and saw a guy's head over the fence, screamed even harder, and ran back to Dad. I guess they exchanged words, he was planning on being lame and staying behind his fence, and then we decided we'd had enough.
Zak drew a Sirius Black tattoo on Jenna because she was 'going as Sirius Black' for the final Harry Potter midnight showing (she originally wanted to have him draw a beard on her, but changed her mind)
Then we got everything set up for the airport, including packing the cheeses we got at Costco (brie, gouda, sharp cheddar, don't worry, this will be relevant later), and headed off towards the airport. We stopped to get gelato, because we don't have a gelato place in Moscow, for some stupid reason. Oh, it was tasty, and just perfect. Everything went smoothly at the airport, minimal tears were shed, and no one was fondled or looked at on the new scanners (didn't happen on our way to CA either, go figure).
We had stopped and grabbed some Quizno's sandwiches for dinner beforehand, and while we waited for the plane, decided to eat. That went all right until Zak spilled pickles on my legs and the juice ended up all over the butt of my jeans, and let's just say, that it was a very unpleasant few moments for us. Yes, it was funny, but I was not in the mood to get pickle juice all over my jeans! He made up for it by buying my a chocolate bar and some water.
Our flight wasn't bad. I don't remember the last time I flew out of Oakland when there was still daylight, so I took some pictures from the plane. And then cried a little, because I didn't want to leave California or my family. It's always a bit bittersweet for me, these trips, because I do love being married and with Zak in Moscow, but I miss home an awful lot. But we had such a great trip, and I'm so glad we were there for Kenny. It was one of the craziest and most exhausting trips to date, but well worth it.
flying over the Bay
The drive home was nice. The sun was setting, the weather was beautiful and there were no cars on the road. I took several sunset pictures; driving in the Palouse region is so picturesque, it's hard not to take pictures. It was nice to arrive home to the pets alive, a thriving garden and a clean house. The cheese even made the trip fine! I texted my mom that the cheese survived, and she texted me back, 'Good-a'. That is why my mom is awesome.
Our Trip to CA: Wednesday: "Day Off"
It was so nice to sleep in! We got up and headed over to my parents' and played Beatles Rock Band with Kenny and Jenna. I think Kenny secreted played in Sweden, because he was just about as good as he was before. I sang, like usual, and Zak played the drums. It was fun, since we haven't played that since we went back a year and a half ago. And it's fun to play with four people, too.
Jenna as the 'couch model'
ignore her foot, I do
Rock Band is intense, you guys
you knew this picture was coming, don't lie
we wanted to print this out and put it on Jenna's birthday present, but that never happened
Although we did have a reservation that night for P.F. Chang's (no pictures, sorry). My parents had like, 3 or 4 gift cards that they hadn't used, so they figured why not use them with all of us here? Everything was yummy, and Jenna got another piece of birthday cake. Well, it was a birthday shooter cake thing, but still. And we ate everything, because P.F. Chang's is delicious. After, we walked to Cheesecake Factory to get slices to take home to eat while watching Harry Potter 7.1. Jenna notified Kenny that he was taking her and her friends to the midnight premiere the next night, which was fine with him. I was glad to watch it again, since we only saw it in the theaters last fall and I had forgotten a lot.
We then crashed again, not wanting to leave the following day..

Our Trip to CA: Tuesday: Great America
Tuesday was Great America day. It's this awesome theme park with roller coasters about an hour and a half south of Concord. We used to go every year with the whole family, usually for my cousin Grant's birthday. There are lots of big roller coaster rides and it's a lot of fun. I think the last time I went was in high school with some friends. I suggested it just as a suggestion to my parents a few weeks before our trip, and they decided it would be fun for all 6 of us to go.
on the way there, the weather was perfect!
ready to ride the swings
It was nice to have an even number of people, too, because it was easy to pair up for rides. We rode several rides and eventually stopped for lunch. Zak and Kenny then opted out on one of my favorite rides, the Drop Zone one, where it's a huge column that just straight up drops you quickly back to Earth. Zak isn't a fan of those, so he and Kenny went on some other ride. They missed out, because it's an awesome ride!
The most irritating part of the day was that I forgot my flip-flops. I could have sworn we had them in the bag in the locker, but they weren't there. I bought new sneakers a few weeks ago and hadn't used them a whole lot, and was getting blisters. So when I went back to change into the flip-flops, and they weren't there, that ruined my life for a little bit. But I got over it once I went on some more roller coasters.
on the sky ride
1. After I had walked angrily back to my family after not having my flip-flops, this random older guy asked if he could use my phone to call a taxi. Dad, Kenny, Jenna and Zak were getting on a ride and I was watching (I didn't line cut because I'm not rude) them, with puzzled looks on their faces as I dialed the phone number and the guy briefly talked to whoever on the phone. He then gave me $3 and went on his way.
2. We were all in line to ride this awesome ride for the second time, it used to be called Survivor, but now it's like Tiki Torch or something. It's a big round disc, where everyone faces outwards, and the disc rotates and slides up and down on a track. It's kind of hard to explain, and it's not as nausea-inducing as it sounds. Except for one kid, apparently. He threw up and it took the employees like 25 minutes to figure out what to do, how to clean it up, etc. It was frustrating because it's seriously not that hard to clean up puke, just get lots of paper towels and cleaner, and go to work. Also, to make a point, when you're on the ride, your mouth is over the edge, it's more difficult to puke on the ride itself; it'd be easy to throw up over the side of the ride, so I don't know what that kid's problem was. Wuss.
it wouldn't be a trip without some Jenna-Zak wrestling fight moves
his 'bored' (but still had fun) face for the Survivor ride
he was very excited to find that hot dog; we looked for 10 minutes for a place where they sold hot dogs!
We also had an awesome time at the bumper cars; Mom watched as we all rammed into each other and chase one another around the track like children. Oh, and we also saw Kristi Yamaguchi with her kids. I couldn't think of a way to get a picture without it being obvious. But it was her; she is super short and petite in real life!

After we got our fill of a dozen icees (how could you go wrong with $1 refills with those souvenir cups, right?) and assorted junk food (including funnel cake, the epitome of delicious, fattening food), we headed home. But not before I got a henna ring tattoo on my right hand. I picked one out and the lady was really cool, and it was done in a few minutes. And then Zak ended up smudging it, so I went back and she did it for me again, with no worries. She told me it should dry in about 15 minutes, and I was super careful about it. And then a few hours later, I was helping with dishes or something, and it got rinsed off. Blah. But it stayed on my skin more or less, for the next few days.
